Madison Middle School Fairgrounds Reimagined

Seventh graders at Madison Middle School have been hard at work on a multi-faceted project related to our future Fairgrounds. Students learned about the Governor’s initiative, the Fairgrounds District Board, the goals for potential redevelopment, and government budgeting and how GRT will work to fund the District. They read articles featuring different opinions on what should be done on the Fairgrounds and then formulated their own opinions and wrote essays arguing their perspective.

Their weeks-long project culminated in poster presentations sharing their plans for the Fairgrounds. While many of the students downsized the footprint of the State Fair, others expanded it. All plans included housing and green space and some students had unique land use ideas such as swimming pools, a veterinary clinic, a skate park, and a car race track.

Kudos to the educators that developed this project and to the students who thoughtfully reflected on the promise of a reimagined Fairgrounds and what it would mean for the future of Albuquerque.
